Diagnostics is a collaboration between Oakland resident artists and car mechanics at Enthusiast Automotive joining to create an interactive art space in an auto shop. Run as an independently-owned business during the last 15 years by Keith Speed Pinckney, the auto shop specializes in the maintenance of older cars. Neighbors, friends, clients, salesmen, and people who love automobiles drop by the auto shop on a regular basis. As such, Enthusiast Automotive serves as the informal center of community life in the neighborhood. Men of different ages gather here to work on their own car projects, to seek and provide advice on issues ranging from automobiles and business to family and relationships. On the basis of fieldwork that we have conducted here since March 2009, we propose to create an art gallery with artworks in collaboration with the mechanics focusing on the social and material life of the shop. The installation will be composed of photographs, drawings, sculptures, paintings, video, and audio that respond to the everyday life at the workshop. We insist on situating this gallery/installation at the site of the auto shop itself rather than outside of it. Thus we reconfigure how the viewer interacts with art and make art more accessible to the community. Our objective is two-fold. First, we celebrate the role of the mechanic and their labor in the community. Second, through such documentation, we figure the daily life of the auto shop as artistic activity.
